PROTECTING THE GIRL CHILD

Naturally girl's are vulnerable and needs protection from parents and the society, even when they feel they are strong to face the harsh part of life.

Girls children face a lot of molestation while growing up into adulthood. These type of situation can change her mindset and make her see every opposite gender as a threat.

According to research, during the first and second world war, there was a high rate of child molestation / rape victims which led most of the women to join the war to avoid being seen as weak and become victims of any kind of abuse.

Over the years, maids who were bought as slaves had, had  different experiences of abuse from those they called Lords, but they had no one to relay their pains. As time went on, this women either became tired or fed up and they choose to run away or commit  suicide just to end the sufferings.

Life wasn't supposed to be that way, everyone has the right to make decisions that don't infringe on that of others. There is a popular saying that we live in a man's world, but this has changed in recent times; as this women have come out in their masses to say NO to child abuse / molestation.

Girl's children go through a lot of abuses and this include the following..

RAPE

VERBAL ABUSE

MALTREATMENT

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

FORCED / EARLY MARRIAGE

FEMALE CIRCUMCISION / GENITAL MUTILATION..

                   RAPE

A situation where someone is forced into any sexual activity without their concent or mutual agreement is refered to as rape...

There are many reported cases of daily raped victims around the world, and the society frowns at those involved in such acts. In Nigeria, the number of rape cases has an increase of 10% every day. Most of the victims are underage child who got molested either by their Neighbors, Landlord, School Teachers, Pastors, Friends, Family Members and lots more..

Rape victims go through a lot of pains, physically, emotionally and  psychologically. In worst cases this victims end up being murdered or threatened in other to make them keep quite.

"There was a recent case of rape which shook the country; about a girl who was Raped and killed in a church while she was  studying for her finally year exams".

"Another  case of a 67-year-old man who Raped a 12- year- old, with the excuse of loosing his senses because of her beauty".

What about the case of a 2-year-old girl who was raped by their neighbor..

CAUSES OF RAPE

According to my own research and observation, the following are what might lead to rape.

  1. Lust
  2. Obsession
  3. Immoral Dressing
  4. Lack of Self control
  5. Moving with the wrong set of people.

PREVENTION

This are just few tips on how to avoid rape.

  • Know the kind of people your children keep as friends.
  • Avoid staying alone in the dark.
  • Dressing properly is very advisable.
  • Avoid lonely partways.
  • Stay away from people who make sexual advances towards you..

  VERBAL ABUSE

Verbal abuse is the act of forcefully criticizing, insulting, or denouncing another person. Characterized by underlying anger and hostility, it is a destructive form of communication intended to harm the self-concept of the other person and produce negative emotions.

Verbal abuse is a maladaptive mechanism that anyone can display occasionally, such as during times of high stress or physical discomfort. For some people, it is a pattern of behaviors used intentionally to control or manipulate others or to get revenge.

Children who live with family friends, pastors, Aunts and Uncles usually go though this kind of abuse. Even in school, bullies make  use of abusive words which causes emotional discomfort.

MALTREATMENT

To maltreat means to treat a person in an ungodly manner with the aim of oppressing them due to hatred. Maltreatment can be in different forms depending on the situation the child finds herself in.

Many married couple take children from different families to live with them with the promise to look after them, but the reverse is always the case. In a situation where a couple  live without children for years and after employing a maid, when they start givng birth,  this couple; just to make sure their children don't feel they are in the same category with the maid, starts to mistreat the maid. They suddenly become harsh, deny their maid food and even become violence to the extent of beating them up.

But a civilized person will take the maid as family, treat them better, as the situation might be even adopt her. Every girl's child deserve to be showered with love.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

There are many cases of domestic violence in the society we live in today and the females are always the victims. This has caused most women either their lives or marriages. Women are supposed to be protected and not treated without respect and love.

" A strong man can handle a strong woman. A weak man who can't handle a strong woman will always say she has Attitude".

Globally, the victims of domestic violence are overwhelmingly women, and women tend to experience more severe forms of violence. They are also likelier than men to use intimate partner violence in self-defense . In some countries, domestic violence is often seen as justified, particularly in cases of actual or suspected infidelity on the part of the woman, and is legally permitted.

Research has proven  that there exists a direct and significant correlation between a country's level of gender equality and rates of domestic violence, where countries with less gender equality experience higher rates of domestic violence.

Domestic violence is among the most underreported crimes worldwide for both men and women.  Due to social stigmas regarding male victimization, men who are victims of domestic violence face an increased likelihood of being overlooked by healthcare providers.

"Domestic violence often occurs when the abuser believes that abuse is an entitlement, acceptable, justified, or unlikely to be reported. It may produce an intergenerational cycle of abuse in children and other family members, who may feel that such violence is acceptable or condoned.

Many people do not recognize themselves as abusers or victims because they may consider their experiences as family conflicts that got out of control. Awareness, perception, definition and documentation of domestic violence differs world wide. Domestic violence often happens in the context of forced or child marriage" .

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

"Sexual  harassment is a type of harassment involving the use of explicit or implicit sexual overtones, including the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors.

Sexual harassment includes a range of actions from verbal transgressions to sexual abuse or assault .

Harassment can occur in many different social settings such as the workplace, the home, school, churches, etc. Harassers or victims may be of any gender".

 FORCED / EARLY MARRIAGE

Forced marriage is a marriage in which one or more of the parties is married without their consent or against their will. In recent years, girls were being forced into early marriages by their parents, family members or foster parents.

Those parents use their children as collateral or as means of exchange for payments of debts. Hopefully due to the introduction of civilization, this traditions have started to fade.  In the northern part of Nigeria, where girls are being forced to marry the elders. Girls between the age of 14-25 are  already living in their husbands houses and most of them were betrothed even before they were born.

 FEMALE CIRCUMCISION / GENITAL MUTILATION..

Female  genital mutilation, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitals.  The practice is found in Africa, Asia and other remote part of the world.

FGM is Typically carried out by a traditional circumciser using a blade and other traditional tools, female genital mutilation is conducted from days after birth to puberty and beyond. In half of the countries for which national figures are available, most girls are cut before the age of five.

Procedures differ according to the country or ethnic group . They include removal of the clitoral hood and clitoral glans; removal of the inner labia ; and removal of the inner and outer labia and closure of the vulva. In this last procedure, known as infibulation , a small hole is left for the passage of urine and menstrual fluid ; the vagina is opened for intercourse and opened further for childbirth.

The practice is rooted in gender inequality , attempts to control women's sexuality , and ideas about purity, modesty and beauty. It is usually initiated and carried out by women, who see it as a source of honour and fear that failing to have their daughters and granddaughters cut will expose the girls to social exclusion.

Adverse health effects depend on the type of procedure; they can include recurrent infections, difficulty urinating and passing menstrual flow, chronic pain, the development of cysts , inability to get pregnant, complications during childbirth, and fatal bleeding. There are no known health benefits obtained from female genital mutilation.
