Three women have been nominated for best director at the Golden Globe awards - the first time more than one has been shortlisted in a single year.
Regina King, Chloe Zhao and Britain's Emerald Fennell are nominated alongside David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin.
Fincher's Mank is the most nominated film with six nominations - the same number as The Crown, which leads the way in the TV awards.
Sacha Baron Cohen and Olivia Colman are among the Britons up for acting awards.
The winners will be announced in a ceremony on 28 February. The awards are taking place two months later than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mank, David Fincher's film about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, leads the film nominations. The Crown is the most nominated TV show despite a row over how it portrays the Royal Family.
Sorkin's film The Trial of the Chicago 7 and TV comedy Schitt's Creek follow with five nominations each.
Baron Cohen and Colman have received two nominations each, with the former recognised for his roles in the films Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Colman is up for best actress in a TV drama, an award she won last year, for playing the Queen in The Crown, and is shortlisted again for her forthcoming film The Father.
Emma Corrin and Josh O'Connor are also nominated for The Crown for their roles as Princess Diana and Prince Charles respectively.
Anya Taylor-Joy is another actress who is up for two awards - for the Jane Austen adaptation Emma and chess drama The Queen's Gambit.
The presence of three women in the best director category comes after only five female directors were nominated in the past 77 years, the last being Ava DuVernay for Selma in 2014.
Fennell, King and Zhao are recognised for their films Promising Young Woman, One Night in Miami and Nomadland respectively.
Britain's Fennell was previously chief writer on the second series of Killing Eve and can be seen in The Crown playing Camilla Parker Bowles.
King is also an actress, having won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for 2018's If Beale Street Could Talk, while Chinese director Zhao is the first woman of Asian descent to be up for the prize.
Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are up for best film drama alongside The Father, Nomadland and Promising Young Woman.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, the sequel to the original 2006 Borat film, is up for best film musical or comedy alongside the Disney+ recording of Broadway hit Hamilton.
Netflix film The Prom, time loop comedy Palm Springs and Music, the directorial debut of pop star Sia, are also up for the same award.
British stars Riz Ahmed, Sir Antony Hopkins and Dev Patel are up for best actor in a film drama for Sound of Metal, The Father and The Personal History of David Copperfield.
They are joined by the late Chadwick Boseman, recognised posthumously for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and French-Algerian actor Tahar Rahim, nominated for The Mauritanian.
Britain's Vanessa Kirby and Carey Mulligan are up for best actress in a film drama for Pieces of a Woman and Promising Young Woman respectively.
Viola Davis, Andra Day and Frances McDormand complete that category for their roles in Ma Rainey, The United States vs Billie Holliday and Nomadland.
Actor and talk show host Corden is up for best actor in a musical or comedy for The Prom, despite being criticised for taking on the role of a gay man in the Netflix stage-to-screen adaptation.

Kate Hudson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Britain's Rosamund Pike are also nominated in this category for Music, French Exit and I Care A Lot respectively.
Hugh Grant is up for best performance by an actor in a TV limited series for The Undoing, the same award he won in 2019 for A Very English Scandal.
Nicole Kidman, his co-star in the HBO drama, is up for the female equivalent, as is Taylor-Joy for The Queen's Gambit and Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones.
Netflix leads the field this year with 22 nominations - more than three times as many as Amazon Studios, which has seven.
Yet there are notable snubs for Netflix's costume saga Bridgerton and Michaela Coel's BBC drama I May Destroy You, which both failed to receive any nominations.
The winners will be announced at the end of the month in a bi-coastal ceremony hosted by Tina Fey in New York and Amy Poehler in Los Angeles.
